Verse 2 of 5

Bless me with clear seeing

ਸੁਮਤਿ ਦੇਵਹੁ ਸੰਤ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
sumat dayvhu sant pi-aaray.
O beloved Saints, please bless me with wisdom;
ਸਿਮਰਉ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
simra-o naam mohi nistaaray. ||1|| rahaa-o.
let me meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and be emancipated. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O beloved saints, please give me clear wisdom, so that I may remember the Naam and be carried across.

It is a strength, not a weakness, to ask wise people to share what they know.
The deeper layer

Ask the saints for clear wisdom, and remembering the Naam carries you across.

This is the rahao, the pause line, the center of the shabad. "Sumat" (good, clear wisdom) is asked for from the "sant," the saints. "Nistaaray" (ferried across) is the classic image of being carried over a rough river to safety.

A Question to Sit With

Who in your life could you go to and honestly ask to share their wisdom?
