Sikhism·Raag Prabhaatee·Raag Parbhaatee, Shabad 34
Verse 3 of 5

The straight and simple path

jin gur kahi-aa maarag seeDhaa.
The Guru has shown me the straight path;
sagal ti-aag naam har geeDhaa.
I have abandoned everything else. I am enraptured with the Name of the Lord.
tis gur kai sadaa bal jaa-ee-ai.
I am forever a sacrifice to that Guru;
har simran jis gur tay paa-ee-ai. ||2||
I meditate in remembrance on the Lord, through the Guru. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Guru showed me the straight path.

I let go of everything else, and the Naam of the One fills me with joy.

I give myself forever to that Guru, through whom I remember the One.

The straightest path is usually the simplest one — the one with the least to chase.
The deeper layer

The Guru shows a straight, simple path; let go of the rest, and you delight in the Naam.

"Maarag seeDhaa" (the straight path) is a life uncomplicated by many chases. "Sagal ti-aag geeDhaa" is letting go of all and becoming absorbed in the Naam. "Bal jaa-ee" (I am a sacrifice) is a warm idiom of total gratitude.

A Question to Sit With

What are some things you chase that, deep down, do not make you happy?
