Rest in the Heart of Things

O detached Yogi, contemplate the essence of reality,

In plain words

O yogi, with an easy, natural mind, think deeply on what is true at the heart of everything,

and you will not have to come back into the world again.

Look into the heart of what is real, with an easy mind, and the restless circling settles.
The deeper layer

Think calmly on what is true at the heart of things, and the circle of coming back comes to rest.

This is the pause line, the center of the whole shabad (hymn).

a-oDhoo means a yogi, someone who has left home to search for the One. Guru Nanak speaks to him directly. sehjay tat beechaar — think deeply about what is real. And do it sehjay, with natural ease, not by forcing.

jaa tay fir na aavhu saisaar — then you will not have to come back into the world again. Put simply, the endless going around in circles comes to rest. You arrive home in what is real.

Think of a playground roundabout. While it spins fast, everything is a blur. When it slows and stops, you can finally see where you are. That easy, unforced calm is called sahaj. It is the doorway here.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like to finally rest instead of always chasing?
