Rise early and sing

ਨਿਤ ਉਠਿ ਗਾਵਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
nit uth gaavhu parabh kee banee.
Rise early, and sing the Glorious Word of God's Bani.
ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ॥੨॥
aath pahar har simrahu paraanee. ||2||
Twenty-four hours a day, meditate in remembrance on the Lord, O mortal. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Get up early each day and sing the words of the One.

All day and all night, O living one, remember the One.

The quiet early hours are a good time to point your heart toward what matters.
The deeper layer

Start the day singing, and let remembering run all day.

The verse says nit uth gaavhu parabh kee banee: get up each day and sing the One's words. This points to the amrit vela, the quiet hours before dawn. It suits this raag too. Prabhaatee is a morning raag, sung at dawn.

Then aath pahar har simrahu paraanee: remember the One through all eight watches of day and night. That means all the time. Think of soft music playing in the background while you do homework. Remembering is meant to be like that. It is a steady stream, not a one-time event.

A Question to Sit With

What is one calm thing you could do in the first few minutes after waking?
