By His Grace, I chant and meditate on the Lord, Har, Har. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I give my whole self, in love and thanks, to my Perfect Guru.

By the Guru's grace, I chant and remember the One, Har, Har.

Even the ability to keep good things in mind is itself a gift you receive.
The deeper layer

All thanks go to the Guru, because even remembering the One is a gift.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the song. Kurbaan jaa-ee gur pooray apnay means "I give my whole self to my perfect Guru." Kurbaan means giving yourself away in love and thanks.

Why? Jis parsaad har har jap japnay means "by whose grace I remember the Lord, over and over." Parsaad means grace, a gift freely given.

Think of learning to ride a bike. You pedaled, yes. But someone held the seat and ran beside you. Even our practice of remembering the One is like that. It is received as a gift, and grace is always there.

A Question to Sit With

What is a good habit in your life that someone else first made possible for you?
