Verse 2 of 5

The nectar-word that sets you free

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣੀ ਸੁਣਤ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥
amrit banee sunat nihaal.
Listening to the Ambrosial Word of His Bani, I am exalted and enraptured.
ਬਿਨਸਿ ਗਏ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਜੰਜਾਲ ॥੧॥
binas ga-ay bikhi-aa janjaal. ||1||
My corrupt and poisonous entanglements are gone. ||1||

In plain words

Listening to the nectar-sweet words of the One, I am filled with joy all the way through.

The sticky, poisonous tangles I was caught in are gone.

Listening closely to something good can loosen the tangles you are caught in.
The deeper layer

Listening to the Guru's sweet words sets you free from what tangles you.

Amrit banee sunat nihaal means "hearing the nectar-word, I am filled with joy." Amrit means nectar, something sweet and life-giving. Banee means the Guru's words. Nihaal means glad all the way through.

This is the same deep listening Guru Nanak praises in Japji Sahib, where he says suniai, "by listening." Deep listening changes the listener.

Binas ga-ay bikhi-aa janjaal means "the poisonous tangles are gone." Janjaal means a tangle or a trap. Think of a knotted necklace. Yanking makes it worse. But patient attention loosens it. Here the tangles just melt away through listening.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference between hearing something and listening to it closely?
