Sikhism·Raag Prabhaatee·Raag Parbhaatee, Shabad 47
Verse 7 of 9

No shortcut around the heart

ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
gur sayvaa bin bhagat na ho-ee.
Without serving the Guru, there is no devotional worship,
ਅਨੇਕ ਜਤਨ ਕਰੈ ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ॥
anayk jatan karai jay ko-ee.
even though one may make all sorts of efforts.
ਹਉਮੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਬਦੇ ਖੋਈ ॥
ha-umai mayraa sabday kho-ee.
If one eradicates egotism and selfishness through the Shabad,
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਸੋਈ ॥੬॥
nirmal naam vasai man so-ee. ||6||
the Immaculate Naam comes to abide in the mind. ||6||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Without serving the Guru, there is no devotion,

even if you try all kinds of ways.

When the Word wipes away "me" and "mine", the feeling of being a separate self, the pure Naam comes to live in the mind.

Devotion fills the space that opens when "me and mine" let go.
The deeper layer

Devotion comes through serving the Guru, and the pure Naam moves in once "me and mine" are gone.

Gur sayvaa bin bhagat na ho-ee: devotion does not come from piling up efforts (anayk jatan). The knot is ha-umai mayraa, the sense of being a separate self, something to see through rather than something to punish. When it loosens, nirmal naam, the pure Naam, comes to live in the mind of its own accord.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever tried hard to force a feeling, only to find it came on its own once you stopped?
