Sikhism·Raag Prabhaatee·Raag Parbhaatee, Shabad 48
Verse 3 of 9

A treasure with no bottom

ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਤੇਰਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
gun niDhaan tayraa ant na paa-i-aa.
O Treasure of Virtue, Your limits cannot be found.
ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦਿ ਤੁਝ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥
saach sabad tujh maahi samaa-i-aa.
Through the True Word of the Shabad, I am absorbed into You.
ਆਵਾ ਗਉਣੁ ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪਿ ਰਚਾਇਆ ॥
aavaa ga-on tuDh aap rachaa-i-aa.
You Yourself created the comings and goings of reincarnation.
ਸੇਈ ਭਗਤ ਜਿਨ ਸਚਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
say-ee bhagat jin sach chit laa-i-aa. ||2||
They alone are devotees, who focus their consciousness on You. ||2||

In plain words

O Treasure of goodness, no one has found Your end.

Through the true Word, I melt into You.

You Yourself made the coming and going of birth and death.

Your devotees are the ones who keep their mind on You, the True One.

The good in the One has no bottom, and turning toward it, you dissolve into it like a drop into the sea.
The deeper layer

The One is a treasure of goodness with no bottom, and the true Word lets you melt into it.

Gun niDhaan means treasure of goodness. Ant na paa-i-aa means no one has found its end. Think of a well so deep that no rope ever reaches the bottom.

Saach sabad is the true Word, the Guru's teaching. Through it: tujh maahi samaa-i-aa, I melt into You. It is like a raindrop falling into the ocean and becoming part of it.

Aavaa ga-on means coming and going, the cycle of being born and moving on. It is spoken of gently here, as something the One set in motion. And the devotees are those who sach chit laa-i-aa, who keep their mind on the True One.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like to be part of something much larger than yourself?
