The same light in every pool

ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਨਰਹਰਿ ਨਿਰਬਾਣੀ ॥

Spiritual wisdom and meditation on the Lord, the Lord of Nirvaanaa

In plain words

Wisdom, and meditation on the One who is completely free:

without meeting the True Guru, no one comes to know this.

The One's Light fills every being, like one light shining in every pool.

I give myself gladly to the One, who is bliss itself.

The same light shines inside every being, like one sun in a thousand pools.
The deeper layer

The same light shines inside everyone.

Gi-aan means understanding and Dhi-aan means quiet focus, or meditation. Both point toward the One who is nirbaanee, completely free. But without meeting the True Guru, the satgur, we would not come to know it.

Then comes a beautiful picture: sagal sarovar jot samaanee. A sarovar is a pool of water, and jot is light. One light fills every pool. Imagine the sun on a morning after rain. Every puddle on the street holds the same sun. That is Ik Onkar, "One Creator": one reality behind all the things that look separate.

The One is aanad roop, bliss itself. So Guru Nanak says kurbaanee: I give myself gladly to You.

A Question to Sit With

If the same light were in everyone you met, how might you treat them?
