The restless mind, finally held

ਭਾਉ ਭਗਤਿ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਪਾਏ ॥
bhaa-o bhagat gurmatee paa-ay.
Through the Guru's Teachings, one achieves loving devotional worship.
ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥

The wandering mind is restrained and held in its place.
ਸਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥੪॥
sachaa naam man vasaa-ay. ||4||
The True Name is enshrined in the mind. ||4||

In plain words

Through the Guru's teaching, loving devotion is found.

The Word burns away ego, the feeling of being a separate "me", from inside.

The wandering mind is held back and kept in its place,

and the True Name comes to live in the mind.

The restless mind settles when it is gently held.
The deeper layer

The Guru's teaching grows love, burns away ego, and holds the running mind still.

Bhaa-o bhagat means loving devotion. It grows gurmatee, through the Guru's teaching.

Next, ha-umai vichahu sabad jalaa-ay: the Word burns away ha-umai, the ego, from inside. Ha-umai is the feeling that "I" am a separate little self at the center of everything. When we understand more, that feeling fades, like fog in the sun.

Then, Dhaavat raakhai thaak rahaa-ay: the mind that runs everywhere is gently held still. Think of a puppy darting around the yard until someone kind picks it up and it settles. And sachaa naam, the True Name, settles into the mind in its place.
