Verse 9 of 9

Alive and awake at once

ਕਰਣੀ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
karnee keerat gurmat saar.
To praise the Lord through the Guru's Teachings is the most excellent action.
ਸੰਤ ਸਭਾ ਗੁਣ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
sant sabhaa gun gi-aan beechaar.
In the Society of the Saints, contemplate the Glories of God and His spiritual wisdom.
ਮਨੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਤ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਣੁ ॥
man maaray jeevat mar jaan.
Whoever subdues his mind, knows the state of being dead while yet alive.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥੮॥੩॥
naanak nadree nadar pachhaan. ||8||3||
O Nanak, by His Grace, the Gracious Lord is realized. ||8||3||

In plain words

Singing the One's praise through the Guru's teaching is the finest thing to do.

In the company of the One's people, think on the One's goodness and wisdom.

Whoever quiets the grasping mind learns what it is to die while still alive.

Nanak says: by grace, the Gracious One is known.

The truest freedom is one you can taste while you're still fully alive, and it arrives as a gift.
The deeper layer

Praising the One is the finest thing you can do, and grace does the rest.

karnee keerat gurmat saar — singing the One's praise, guided by the Guru, is the best action. sant sabhaa gun gi-aan beechaar — in the sant sabhaa, the company of the One's people, think together about the One's goodness and wisdom.

man maaray jeevat mar jaan — quiet the grabby mind, and you learn to be "dead while still alive." That sounds strange. It means the "me first" self goes quiet, so a deeper life can breathe. Think of a noisy room going still, so you can finally hear the music.

naanak nadree nadar pachhaan — O Nanak, by grace, the Gracious One is known. Sikhs call this gurprasad, the Guru's gift. Grace is already here. We recognize it; we don't earn it.

A Question to Sit With

What is a gift you've been given that you could never have bought or earned?
