One, inside and out

ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਚੂਕੈ ਤਾਂ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥
dubiDhaa chookai taaN sabad pachhaan.
When one is rid of duality, then he realizes the Word of the Shabad.
ਘਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਏਕੋ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੁ ॥
ghar baahar ayko kar jaan.
Inside and out, he knows the One Lord.
ਏਹਾ ਮਤਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਹੈ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
ayhaa mat sabad hai saar.
This is the most Excellent Wisdom of the Shabad.
ਵਿਚਿ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਮਾਥੈ ਪਵੈ ਛਾਰੁ ॥੭॥
vich dubiDhaa maathai pavai chhaar. ||7||
Ashes fall on the heads of those who are in duality. ||7||

In plain words

When the split in two ends, you recognize the Word.

Inside and out, you know the One alone.

This is the finest wisdom of the Word.

Those who stay split in two end up with ashes on their heads.

Stop splitting the world in two, and you find it was always One, inside and out.
The deeper layer

When the split in two ends, the Word makes sense and you know the One inside and out.

dubiDhaa chookai — when dubiDhaa ends. DubiDhaa means "two-ness," the feeling of "me here, everything else over there." sabad pachhaan — then you recognize the Word.

ghar baahar ayko kar jaan — know the One inside and outside. That is the heart of it. ayhaa mat sabad hai saar — this is the best wisdom of the Word.

vich dubiDhaa maathai pavai chhaar — in two-ness, ashes fall on your head. It is an old picture of effort that comes to nothing. Think of building a sandcastle and watching a wave wash it away. All that work, and only sand in your hair.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you draw a line between 'me' and 'the world' that might not be as solid as it feels?
