A Life That Counts

ਕਲਿ ਮਹਿ ਆਇਆ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥
kal meh aa-i-aa so jan jaan.
In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, one's birth is approved,
ਸਾਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਵੈ ਮਾਣੁ ॥੩॥
saachee dargeh paavai maan. ||3||
if one is honored in the True Court. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

In this dark, confusing age, a person's coming into the world counts

when they are honored in the True Court.

A life counts by ringing true where it matters most.
The deeper layer

A life counts when it is honored in the True Court.

Kal meh aa-i-aa so jan jaan: in Kali Yuga, the age often called dark or confused, a person's coming into the world is worthwhile saachee dargeh paavai maan, if they are honored in the True Court. Kal here is simply a noisy, confusing age, and the measure of a worthwhile life is truth. A life counts by ringing true where it most matters, more than by trophies or fame.
