If Bal the king has recognized Him, he would not have been deceived, and sent to the underworld. ||3||

In plain words

The One took the form of a tiny man and asked King Bali for a little land.

If Bali had recognized who stood before him, he would not have been tricked, and he would not have been sent down into the world below.

The most important thing often arrives in plain wrapping; watch for it.
The deeper layer

The most important thing can arrive in a plain wrapping.

This verse recalls another old story. The One came to King Bali as a baavan, a very small man, and asked for just a little land. The king did not see who was standing in front of him. So he was tricked and sent down low.

Jay bal roop pachhaanai: if only Bali had recognized who that was. It all would have gone differently. The story has a darker ending, but the living point is simple. The holy often shows up in a humble way. It might be the quiet kid in class who turns out to be the kindest friend you ever had.

A Question to Sit With

When has something small or ordinary turned out to matter far more than it first seemed?
