In plain words

The wise Vyaas taught King Janmayjaa and warned him against three things.

Still the king held the great feast, and eighteen Brahmin priests lost their lives. What we have done cannot be wished away.

Good advice can only help you when you let it in.
The deeper layer

Good advice only helps when you take it in.

Here the verse tells of King Janmayjaa. The wise teacher Vyaas warned him clearly against three things. The king did them anyway, and at a great feast much harm was done.

Then comes the line kirat na chalai chalaa-i-aa. Kirat means the record of our own actions. The line says that record cannot simply be pushed aside. Children already know this. If a ball breaks a window, saying sorry matters, but the window still needs fixing. What we do travels forward with us.

A Question to Sit With

Think of a time you were warned but did it anyway. What did you learn?
