Verse 1 of 9

The Name is my ground

ਪ੍ਰਭਾਤੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
parbhaatee mehlaa 1.
Prabhaatee, First Mehl:
ਆਖਣਾ ਸੁਨਣਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੁ ॥
aakh-naa sunnaa naam aDhaar.
To chant and listen to the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is my Support.
ਧੰਧਾ ਛੁਟਕਿ ਗਇਆ ਵੇਕਾਰੁ ॥
DhanDhaa chhutak ga-i-aa vaykaar.
Worthless entanglements are ended and gone.
ਜਿਉ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥
ji-o manmukh doojai pat kho-ee.
The self-willed manmukh, caught in duality, loses his honor.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥੧॥
bin naavai mai avar na ko-ee. ||1||
Except for the Name, I have no other at all. ||1||

In plain words

Speaking the Naam and listening to it is what holds me up.

My useless tangles have fallen away. The one who follows only their own wants, pulled two ways at once, loses their honor. Apart from the Naam, I have no one else at all.

Speaking and listening for the Naam is the ground that holds you up.
The deeper layer

The Naam, spoken and listened to, is the ground that holds you up.

Aakh-naa sunnaa naam aDhaar: speaking and listening to the Naam is my support. DhanDhaa chhutak ga-i-aa vaykaar: the useless tangles drop away. The manmukh, someone led only by their own wants, is pulled in two directions, doojai, and loses honor. Bin naavai mai avar na ko-ee: apart from the Naam, I have no one else. Think of a tree's roots. Wind can shake the branches, and the roots hold.

A Question to Sit With

What is the steady thing you can lean on when everything else feels tangled?
