Verse 9 of 9

Only the Maker never slips

ਭੁਲਣ ਵਿਚਿ ਕੀਆ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ਕਰਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਨ ਭੁਲੈ ॥
bhulan vich kee-aa sabh ko-ee kartaa aap na bhulai.
Everyone makes mistakes; only the Creator does not make mistakes.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ਕੋ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਅਘੁਲੈ ॥੮॥੪॥
naanak sach naam nistaaraa ko gur parsaad aghulai. ||8||4||
O Nanak, salvation comes through the True Name. By Guru's Grace, one is released. ||8||4||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Everyone makes mistakes. Only the Creator never makes a mistake.

Nanak says: freedom comes through the True Name. By the Guru's grace, a person is set free.

Everyone stumbles; only the Maker never slips, and grace is always the way home.
The deeper layer

Everyone makes mistakes; only the Creator never does.

Bhulan vich kee-aa sabh ko-ee: every one of us slips. Kartaa aap na bhulai: only the Maker never slips.

So there is no shame in falling. There is only the way home. Naanak sach naam nistaaraa: Nanak says the True Name carries us across. And gur parsaad, the Guru's grace, a gift freely given, sets us free. Think of learning to ride a bike. Everyone falls. What matters is the hand that helps you up again.

A Question to Sit With

How would you treat yourself after a mistake if you believed there was no shame in falling?
