Sikhism·Raag Prabhaatee·Raag Parbhaatee, Shabad 50
Verse 8 of 9

The Maker moves through everything

ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਏ ਕਰਤਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਏਹ ਰਚਨਾ ਰਚੀਐ ॥
aapay karay karaa-ay kartaa jin ayh rachnaa rachee-ai.
The Creator who created this creation acts, and causes all to act.
ਹਰਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਜੀਅਹੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੇ ਪੈ ਪਚੀਐ ॥੭॥
har abhimaan na jaa-ee jee-ahu abhimaanay pai pachee-ai. ||7||
O Lord, egotistical pride does not depart from the soul. Falling into egotistical pride, one is ruined. ||7||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Creator who made all of this acts, and makes everyone act.

O Lord, pride does not easily leave the heart. Falling into pride, a person comes to ruin.

Pride is the hardest thing to loosen, and seeing it clearly is the first step.
The deeper layer

The Creator moves through everything, but pride is the hardest knot to untie.

Aapay karay karaa-ay kartaa: the Creator acts, and makes everything act. The whole world moves inside the One who made it.

Yet abhimaan, proud ego, does not leave us easily. It is the feeling that everything is about me. The verse says that falling into that pride, a person is ruined. Gurbani treats this pride like an illness to heal, not a crime to punish. It is like a splinter. It keeps hurting while it stays in. Seeing it clearly is the first step to getting it out.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you notice a little voice insisting 'it's all about me,' and what happens when you notice it?
