Sikhism·Raag Prabhaatee·Raag Parbhaatee, Shabad 50
Verse 7 of 9

What doesn't stick to you

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਲਿਪਤੁ ਲੇਪੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਸਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥
gurmukh alipat layp kaday na laagai sadaa rahai sarnaa-ee.
The Gurmukh remains detached; filth never attaches itself to him. He remains forever in God's Sanctuary.
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਆਗੈ ਚੇਤੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਦੁਖਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਈ ॥੬॥
manmukh mugaDh aagai chaytai naahee dukh laagai pachhutaa-ee. ||6||
The foolish self-willed manmukh does not think of the future; he is overtaken by pain, and then he regrets. ||6||

In plain words

The one who faces the Guru stays untouched. No dirt ever sticks to them, and they rest in the One's shelter always.

The foolish one who follows only their own wants never thinks ahead. When pain comes, they are sorry.

Staying awake keeps the world's mess from clinging to you.
The deeper layer

The one who stays turned toward the Guru does not get stuck in the world's mess.

Gurmukh alipat: the gurmukh, the one who faces the Guru, stays clean. Layp kaday na laagai: the dirt never sticks. Think of a raincoat in a storm. The water just runs off. Such a person rests in the One's shelter, sarnaa-ee, calm and steady.

The other picture is the manmukh, someone led only by their own wants. They rush ahead without thinking about what comes next. Then trouble catches up, and they feel sorry. The verse is not calling anyone bad. It is about being awake, or not.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you pause and look before you rush into something?
