Sikhism·Raag Prabhaatee·Raag Parbhaatee, Shabad 51
Verse 3 of 9

The flow was written long ago

ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਬਿਨਾਸੁ ॥
is man maa-i-aa mohi binaas.
This mind is ruined by its attachment to Maya.
ਧੁਰਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਕਹੀਐ ਕਾਸੁ ॥
Dhur hukam likhi-aa taaN kahee-ai kaas.
The Command of the Primal Lord is pre-ordained. Before whom should I cry?
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਚੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੈ ਕੋਈ ॥
gurmukh virlaa cheenHai ko-ee.
Only a few, as Gurmukh, understand this.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਹੂਨਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੨॥
naam bihoonaa mukat na ho-ee. ||2||
Without the Naam, no one is liberated. ||2||

In plain words

Clinging to Maya, the pull of passing things, this mind comes to ruin.

The flow of life was written from the very start, so to whom could I go and complain? Only a few, turned toward the Guru, understand this. Without the Naam, no one is set free.

The flow of life was set long before you; the wise learn to read it rather than fight it.
The deeper layer

Clinging to passing things unsettles your mind, and the Naam sets you free.

Is man maa-i-aa mohi binaas: attachment to Maya, the shine of passing things, ruins the mind. Dhur hukam likhi-aa is the Hukam, the flow of existence, set from the very beginning, the way gravity simply works. Taan kahee-ai kaas: to whom could I complain? Gurmukh virlaa cheenHai ko-ee: only a rare person, facing the Guru, sees this. Naam bihoonaa mukat na ho-ee: without the Naam, no one is freed.

A Question to Sit With

Is there something you keep wishing were different that might be worth simply understanding instead?
