The mind that swings high and low

bharam bharam dolai lakh cha-uraasee.
People wander lost, staggering and stumbling through 8.4 million incarnations.
bin gur boojhay jam kee faasee.
Without knowing the Guru, they cannot escape the noose of Death.

This mind, from one moment to the next, goes from the heavens to the underworld.
gurmukh chhootai naam samHaal. ||3||
The Gurmukh contemplates the Naam, and is released. ||3||

In plain words

People wander lost, stumbling through 8.4 million kinds of lives.

Without knowing the Guru, they cannot slip free of death's noose. This mind flies up to the heavens and drops down to the depths, moment by moment. The one who faces the Guru holds the Naam close and is set free.

The mind swings from high to low until something steady, held close, settles it.
The deeper layer

Your mind swings high and low until the Naam steadies it.

Bharam bharam dolai lakh cha-uraasee: people wander through 8.4 million forms of life, an old way of saying countless lives. Bin gur boojhay jam kee faasee: without the Guru's understanding, death's noose stays tight. Ih manoo-aa khin khin oobh pa-i-aal: moment by moment, the mind soars and plunges, like a mood that keeps swinging. Gurmukh chhootai naam samHaal: the one facing the Guru keeps the Naam close and goes free.

A Question to Sit With

What does your mind do when it swings from very up to very down, and what steadies it?
