Sikhism·Raag Prabhaatee·Raag Parbhaatee, Shabad 51
Verse 5 of 9

Let the small self go, live at ease

ਆਪੇ ਸਦੇ ਢਿਲ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
aapay saday dhil na ho-ay.
When God sends His Summons, there is no time to delay.
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਸਹਿਲਾ ਜੀਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥
sabad marai sahilaa jeevai so-ay.
When one dies in the Word of the Shabad, he lives in peace.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੋਝੀ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
bin gur sojhee kisai na ho-ay.
Without the Guru, no one understands.
ਆਪੇ ਕਰੈ ਕਰਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥
aapay karai karaavai so-ay. ||4||
The Lord Himself acts, and inspires all to act. ||4||

In plain words

When the One calls a person home, there is no delay.

The one whose selfish self dies away in the Word lives in peace. Without the Guru, no one understands. The One acts, and moves everyone to act.

Let the grasping self quiet down and you don't lose your life; you finally live it at ease.
The deeper layer

Let your selfish self go quiet in the Word, and you live in peace.

Aapay saday dhil na ho-ay: when the One's call comes, there is no delay. Sabad marai sahilaa jeevai so-ay: whoever dies to the small self through the Word lives with ease. Sikhs call this jeevat marnaa, dying while alive: the grasping self goes quiet so a lighter life can begin. Bin gur sojhee kisai na ho-ay: without the Guru, no one understands. Aapay karai karaavai so-ay: the One acts and moves all to act.

A Question to Sit With

What might feel lighter if you stopped trying to control every single thing?
