Sikhism·Raag Prabhaatee·Raag Parbhaatee, Shabad 53
Verse 4 of 9

Up and down until it knows

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਅਭ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਸਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਪਚਹਿ ਦਿਵਾਨੇ ॥
manmukh tay abh bhagat na hovas ha-umai pacheh divaanay.
The self-willed manmukhs do not know loving devotional worship; they are insane, rotting away in their egotism.
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੂਆ ਖਿਨੁ ਊਭਿ ਪਇਆਲੀ ਜਬ ਲਗਿ ਸਬਦ ਨ ਜਾਨੇ ॥੩॥
ih manoo-aa khin oobh paa-i-aalee jab lag sabad na jaanay. ||3||
This mind flies in an instant from the heavens to the underworld, as long as it does not know the Word of the Shabad. ||3||

In plain words

The one who follows only their own wants does not know loving devotion. Lost in ego, they go wild and waste away.

This mind flies from the sky to the depths in an instant, as long as it does not know the Word.

The mind keeps swinging high and low until it comes to know the Word.
The deeper layer

The mind swings up and down until it knows the Word.

The verse says manmukh tay abh bhagat na hovas: when someone is turned away, loving devotion cannot take root. Bhagat means loving devotion. Then ha-umai pacheh divaanay: the ego wears them down. Ha-umai is the "me, me" feeling. The verse uses strong words here for how much it wears a person out.

Next comes ih manoo-aa khin oobh paa-i-aalee: in an instant, this mind flies from the sky to the depths. It is like a swing that will not stop. It keeps going jab lag sabad na jaanay, as long as it does not know the Word. Once it knows the Word, it grows still.
