O mind, do only those deeds which will lead you to the Path of the Lord. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O my mind, face the Guru and remember the Naam.

O mind, do only those deeds that lead you onto the path where the One is found.

Choose the deeds that bring you nearer, not the ones that lead away.
The deeper layer

Remember the Naam, and choose the deeds that lead you to the One.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Man mayray gurmukh naam Dhi-aa-ay means "O my mind, face the Guru and remember the Naam." A gurmukh is someone whose face is turned toward the Guru's teaching.

Jit maarag har paa-ee-ai man say-ee karam kamaa-ay means "O mind, do only the deeds that lead to the One's path." Maarag means path. Karam means deeds.

Think of a map app. Every turn you take either brings you closer to home or takes you farther away. Our actions matter like that. They either draw us nearer or lead us off.

A Question to Sit With

What is one deed today that would bring you a little nearer to what matters?
