Verse 5 of 9

You Cannot Sleepwalk to the Truth

ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਜਾਗ੍ਰਣੁ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਪਵਈ ਥਾਇ ॥
ha-umai vich jaagran na hova-ee har bhagat na pav-ee thaa-ay.
In egotism, one cannot remain awake and aware, and one's devotional worship of the Lord is not accepted.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦਰਿ ਢੋਈ ਨਾ ਲਹਹਿ ਭਾਇ ਦੂਜੈ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ॥੪॥
manmukh dar dho-ee naa laheh bhaa-ay doojai karam kamaa-ay. ||4||
The self-willed manmukhs find no place in the Court of the Lord; they do their deeds in the love of duality. ||4||

In plain words

Caught up in ego, no one can stay awake inside, and devotion done that way is not accepted.

People who follow only their own wanting find no place at the One's door. They do everything in the love of other things.

You cannot sleepwalk your way to the Truth.
The deeper layer

When you're all wrapped up in yourself, you can't stay awake inside.

This is the other side of the picture. Ha-umai vich jaagran na hova-ee means "in ha-umai, there is no staying awake." Ha-umai is the "I, me, mine" voice. It lulls us to sleep inside. Har bhagat na pav-ee thaa-ay means "that kind of devotion isn't accepted."

A manmukh is someone who follows only their own wants. Manmukh dar dho-ee naa laheh means "the self-willed find no place at the door." Bhaa-ay doojai means "in love with the second," chasing things instead of the One.

The verse pictures a royal court with no room for them. Its heart is the feeling of having no true home. Think of sleepwalking through a whole day. You were busy, but you can't remember any of it. That is the loneliness of a life lived only on the surface.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like to sleepwalk through a day, and what does it feel like to be awake?
