In plain words

Those who follow the Guru's teaching have faces that glow with beauty. They keep the One held close in their hearts.

Here and in the life beyond, they find deep peace. Repeating the Naam of the One, Har, Har, they are carried across to the other shore.

Inner peace has a way of showing up right on your face.
The deeper layer

Live by the Guru's teaching, and the peace inside you shows on your face.

Gurmatee mukh sohnay means "through the Guru's teaching, faces become beautiful." Gurmat is the Guru's wisdom. Mukh means face. A shining face comes up again and again in Gurbani, the Guru's holy songs. It means peace inside showing on the outside.

Think of a friend who just got good news. You can see it before they say a word. Har raakhi-aa ur Dhaar means "they keep the One held in their heart."

Aithai othai sukh ghanaa means "here and there, great peace." Aithai is this life, othai the life beyond. Jap har har utray paar means "remembering the One, they cross to the other shore." It is like a boat carrying you safely through rough water.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever seen peace shining on someone's face?
