Ego Has No Home

ਅਹੰਮੇਵ ਸਿਉ ਮਸਲਤਿ ਛੋਡੀ ॥
ahaNmayv si-o maslat chhodee.
I have forsaken the advice of my ego.
ਗੁਰਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਇਹੁ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਹੋਡੀ ॥
gur kahi-aa ih moorakh hodee.
The Guru has told me that this is foolish stubbornness.
ਇਹੁ ਨੀਘਰੁ ਘਰੁ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਪਾਏ ॥
ih neeghar ghar kahee na paa-ay.
This ego is homeless; it shall never find a home.
ਹਮ ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੀਏ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥੬॥
ham gur raakh lee-ay liv laa-ay. ||6||
The Guru has saved me; I am lovingly attuned to the Lord. ||6||

In plain words

I have stopped taking advice from my ego.

The Guru told me it is foolish stubbornness.

This ego has no home; it will never find a home anywhere.

The Guru has kept me safe, and I am held in loving tune with the One.

Ego is restless and never finds a home; you can set it down.
The deeper layer

Ego is a homeless, stubborn voice, and you can stop taking its advice.

AhaNmayv means the proud "I," the voice that says "me first." Guru Arjan says he stopped taking its advice. Gur kahi-aa ih moorakh hodee means the Guru showed him it is foolish and stubborn.

Ih neeghar means this ego is homeless. Ghar kahee na paa-ay means it never finds a home. It can never rest, because it never has enough. Think of a phone that always wants one more notification. It is never done.

So he set it down. The Guru saved him, and he tuned his heart lovingly to the One.

A Question to Sit With

What does the me-first voice in your head cost you?
