Taking Back the Reins From My Senses

ਦਸ ਨਾਰੀ ਮੈ ਕਰੀ ਦੁਹਾਗਨਿ ॥
das naaree mai karee duhaagan.
I have made widows of the ten sensory organs.
ਗੁਰਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਏਹ ਰਸਹਿ ਬਿਖਾਗਨਿ ॥
gur kahi-aa ayh raseh bikhaagan.
The Guru has told me that these pleasures are the fires of corruption.
ਇਨ ਸਨਬੰਧੀ ਰਸਾਤਲਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
in sanbanDhee rasaatal jaa-ay.
Those who associate with them go to hell.
ਹਮ ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੫॥
ham gur raakhay har liv laa-ay. ||5||
The Guru has saved me; I am lovingly attuned to the Lord. ||5||

In plain words

I no longer belong to the ten senses. I have left them on their own, with no one to follow.

The Guru told me these pleasures are fires of poison.

Those who stay tied to them sink down to the lowest place.

The Guru has kept me safe, and I am held in loving tune with the One.

Take the reins back from your senses before they burn you out.
The deeper layer

Pleasures the senses chase burn like fire, and the Guru keeps you in tune with the One.

Das naaree is an old picture word for our ten senses and body parts that go after pleasure, like eyes, ears and tongue. Duhaagan is a wife left alone. Guru Arjan says the senses no longer have him to lead around; he no longer lets them run his life.

Gur kahi-aa ayh raseh bikhaagan means the Guru showed him these pleasures are a burning fire. Chasing them wears a person out. Think of playing a video game all night: fun at first, then you feel empty and tired.

The verse warns that people who stay tied to them sink very low. But the Guru steadied him. Har liv laa-ay means he tuned his heart lovingly to the One.

A Question to Sit With

When do your wants run you, instead of you running them?
