I Stopped Listening to Anger

ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਸਿਉ ਠਾਟੁ ਨ ਬਨਿਆ ॥
kaam kroDh si-o thaat na bani-aa.
I have no dealings whatsoever with sexual desire and anger.
ਗੁਰ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਕਾਨੀ ਸੁਨਿਆ ॥
gur updays mohi kaanee suni-aa.
I listen to the Guru's Teachings.
ਜਹ ਦੇਖਉ ਤਹ ਮਹਾ ਚੰਡਾਲ ॥
jah daykh-a-u tah mahaa chandaal.
Wherever I look, I see the most horrible goblins.
ਰਾਖਿ ਲੀਏ ਅਪੁਨੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਗੋਪਾਲ ॥੪॥
raakh lee-ay apunai gur gopaal. ||4||
My Guru, the Lord of the World, has saved me from them. ||4||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I have nothing to do with strong wanting and anger anymore.

I listen with my own ears to the Guru's teaching.

Wherever I look, I see frightening goblins.

My Guru, the Lord of the World, has kept me safe from them.

Stop doing business with anger, and turn your ear to what is wise.
The deeper layer

Stop doing business with wanting and anger, listen to the Guru, and you are kept safe.

Kaam means strong wanting and kroDh means anger. Thaat na bani-aa means Guru Arjan has stopped doing business with them. Instead, gur updays mohi kaanee suni-aa: he turned his ear to the Guru's teaching. Listening is what changed everything.

Then comes a scary picture. Jah daykh-a-u tah mahaa chandaal means everywhere he looked, frightening shapes seemed to be around. When anger and wanting are loud, the world can feel full of threats.

But gur gopaal, the Guru, Lord of the world, kept him safe. Think of a lifeguard at the pool. The water can feel scary, but someone is watching over you.

A Question to Sit With

What happens inside you when you stop feeding your anger?
