The Merciful Guru has protected and saved me. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I have broken off with greed and with clinging attachment.

The kind Guru set me free from them.

These cheating thieves have robbed so many homes.

The kind Guru has kept me safe.

Greed and grasping are burglars — it is a relief to be free of them.
The deeper layer

Greed and clinging are thieves that have robbed many homes, and the kind Guru keeps you safe from them.

Lobh means greed, always wanting more. Moh means getting stuck on things and not letting go. Guru Arjan says he has broken off from both.

He calls them thagvaaree, cheating thieves. Bahut ghar gaalay means they have robbed so many homes. Think of a scam message that tricks lots of people. It looks friendly, but it takes and takes.

Gur kirpaal, the kind Guru, pulled him free. Like the verses around it, this one ends with the same thankful line: the Guru saved me.

A Question to Sit With

What has ever robbed your peace the way a burglar robs a house?
