Sikhism·Raag Prabhaatee·Raag Parbhaatee, Shabad 57
Verse 2 of 10

You Cannot Get There by Pretending

ਇਤੁ ਸੰਜਮਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕਿਨ ਹੀ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
it sanjam parabh kin hee na paa-i-aa.
No one has ever found God in this way.
ਭਗਉਤੀ ਮੁਦ੍ਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bhag-utee mudraa man mohi-aa maa-i-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The sacred mudras - ritualistic hand gestures - are made, but the mind remains enticed by Maya. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

No one has ever found the One this way.

People make the holy hand shapes, yet the mind stays caught by Maya, the pull of shiny, passing things.

You cannot reach the One by getting the outside right.
The deeper layer

You cannot reach the One by getting the outside right.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. It says it sanjam parabh kin hee na paa-i-aa: no one has ever found the One by this sanjam, this method.

A mudraa is a ritual hand shape. It can be made perfectly. But man mohi-aa maa-i-aa: the mind is still pulled by Maya, the shine of passing things. It is like smiling perfectly for a photo while feeling grumpy inside. Form without heart gets nowhere.

A Question to Sit With

When have you tried to look right on the outside while your heart was somewhere else?
