A House of Sand

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਈ ਪਰਮ ਗਤੇ ॥
bin satgur kinai na paa-ee param gatay.
Without the True Guru, no one has attained the supreme status.
ਪੂਛਹੁ ਸਗਲ ਬੇਦ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੇ ॥
poochhahu sagal bayd simritay.
Go ahead and ask all the Vedas and the Simritees.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਅਜਾਈ ॥
manmukh karam karai ajaa-ee.
The self-willed manmukhs do useless deeds.
ਜਿਉ ਬਾਲੂ ਘਰ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਠਾਈ ॥੭॥
ji-o baaloo ghar tha-ur na thaa-ee. ||7||
They are like a house of sand, which cannot stand. ||7||

In plain words

Without the True Guru, no one has reached the highest state.

Go ahead and ask all the Vedas and Simritis, the old holy books.

People who follow only their own wanting do useless deeds.

They are like a house of sand that cannot stand.

Actions with nothing behind them are a house of sand.
The deeper layer

Actions with nothing behind them are like a house of sand.

The verse says bin satgur kinai na paa-ee param gatay: without the True Guru, no one reaches the highest state. Then poochhahu sagal bayd simritay: go and ask all the Vedas and Simritis, the old holy books of India. They agree.

A manmukh, a person who follows only their own wants, does empty deeds. They are ji-o baaloo ghar, like a house of sand. Picture a sandcastle at the beach. You can shape it with great care. But nothing solid holds it up, so the first wave takes it.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you built that had nothing solid underneath?
