The Rare One Who Sews the Words Inside
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The one to whom the Lord of the Universe becomes kind sews the Guru's Word into the edge of their robe.
Out of millions, such a saint is rarely seen.
Nanak says: in their company, we are carried across.
The rare person who keeps the Guru's Word sewn close carries others across with them.
Here the shabad turns toward hope. It speaks of the person jis no bha-ay gobind da-i-aalaa: the one to whom Gobind, the Lord of the world, becomes kind. Then gur kaa bachan tin baaDhi-o paalaa: they tie the Guru's word into the hem of their robe. It means keeping the Word always close, like a note from someone you love kept in your pocket.
Such a person is rare: kot maDhay ko-ee sant dikhaa-i-aa, one in millions. And naanak tin kai sang taraa-i-aa: just being near them carries others across.
Whose steady example would you like to keep close?
