A Clean Body, a Hidden Heart

ਕਹਾ ਉਡੀਸੇ ਮਜਨੁ ਕੀਆ ਕਿਆ ਮਸੀਤਿ ਸਿਰੁ ਨਾਂਏਂ ॥
kahaa udeesay majan kee-aa ki-aa maseet sir naaN-ayN.
What is the use of bathing at Orissa? Why do the Muslims bow their heads in the mosque?
ਦਿਲ ਮਹਿ ਕਪਟੁ ਨਿਵਾਜ ਗੁਜਾਰੈ ਕਿਆ ਹਜ ਕਾਬੈ ਜਾਂਏਂ ॥੪॥
dil meh kapat nivaaj gujaarai ki-aa haj kaabai jaaN-ayN. ||4||
If someone has deception in his heart, what good is it for him to utter prayers? And what good is it for him to go on pilgrimage to Mecca? ||4||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

What good is bathing at the holy waters of Orissa? What good is bowing your head in the mosque?

If there is trickery hidden in your heart, what good is saying prayers? What good is the journey to Mecca?

No journey reaches its goal if the heart is hiding something.
The deeper layer

An honest heart is what makes every bath, bow and journey count.

The pilgrimage lines — bathing at the holy site, bowing in the mosque, journeying to Mecca — are all weighed against one thing: what is inside the heart. Dil meh kapat: if deception is hiding inside, the outward act never arrives at its destination. Kabir does not forbid the practices; he says the geography of the sacred is interior. What the One reads is sincerity, not the itinerary.

A Question to Sit With

When has doing the right thing on the outside not matched how you felt inside?
