The Marketplace of the Mind

ਮਾਨੈ ਹਾਟੁ ਮਾਨੈ ਪਾਟੁ ਮਾਨੈ ਹੈ ਪਾਸਾਰੀ ॥
maanai haat maanai paat maanai hai paasaaree.
The mind is the shop, the mind is the town, and the mind is the shopkeeper.
ਮਾਨੈ ਬਾਸੈ ਨਾਨਾ ਭੇਦੀ ਭਰਮਤੁ ਹੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ॥੨॥
maanai baasai naanaa bhaydee bharmat hai sansaaree. ||2||
The mind abides in various forms, wandering all across the world. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The mind is the shop, the mind is the town, and the mind is the shopkeeper too.

The mind lives in many different shapes, and wanders all over the world.

An unsettled mind wanders everywhere; it needs an anchor to come home to.
The deeper layer

Your mind is like a whole busy market, and it never sits still.

Maanai haat maanai paat maanai hai paasaaree means "the mind is the shop, the mind is the town, and the mind is the shopkeeper." It stocks the shelves, builds the streets, and runs the cash register. Everything you experience passes through it.

Then bharmat hai sansaaree means "it wanders all over the world." It takes shape after shape and chases thing after thing. It never rests.

Think of a phone with fifty apps open, all buzzing at once. That's a mind on its own. This verse names the problem so the next verse can give the answer. A mind this strong and this restless needs a true place to come home to.

A Question to Sit With

What helps your mind stop racing and settle down?
