Every Pot From One Clay

ਜਿਉ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸਿਆ ਮਾਟੀ ਕੁੰਭੇਉ ॥
ji-o pargaasi-aa maatee kumbhay-o.
Just as the pitcher is made from clay,
ਆਪ ਹੀ ਕਰਤਾ ਬੀਠੁਲੁ ਦੇਉ ॥੨॥
aap hee kartaa beethul day-o. ||2||
everything is made from the Beloved Divine Creator Himself. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Just as a pitcher is shaped out of clay,

everything is made from the beloved Creator, Beethul, the One alone.

Just as a pot is only clay, everything that exists is only the One, taking shape.
The deeper layer

Everything is made of the One, the way a pot is made of clay.

A clay pitcher is only clay, shaped by a potter. Aap hee kartaa beethul day-o means the beloved Maker made everything from itself. Beethul (Vitthal) is the name Namdev used for the One, as the One was loved at the temple in his home region of Pandharpur.

The world is the One taking shape. Think of cookies cut from one sheet of dough. They come in many shapes, but it is all the same dough. That is oneness said as simply as it can be.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that looks like many things but is made of one thing?
