We come from Him; surrendering to Him, O Nanak, one is approved as a householder, and a renunciate. ||4||8||

In plain words

Hope comes from the One. Hand your hopes back to the One, and you rest in deep, free peace.

Nanak says: we come from the One. Whoever lives by that, trusting the One they came from, is welcomed as a family person and as one who has let go, both at once.

You can live fully in the world and be fully free at the same time.
The deeper layer

You can live in the world and be free inside, both at once, when you hand your hopes back to the One.

This verse answers the question from the verse before.

jis kee aasaa tis hee sa-up kai — give your hopes back to the One they came from. ayhu rahi-aa nirbaan — then you rest in nirbaan, a deep peace with no craving.

jis tay ho-aa so-ee kar maani-aa — honor the One you came from. naanak girhee udaasee so parvaan — O Nanak, that person is accepted, both as a householder and as one who has let go.

Think of a kid at a sleepover who knows home is one phone call away. They can enjoy everything and still feel safe. You don't need to run away from the world to be free. You can live fully in it and be free inside.

A Question to Sit With

Do you have to leave everything behind to be at peace, or can you find peace right where you are?
