In plain words

In the early hours before dawn, remember the Naam through the Shabad, the Guru's Word. Let go of your love for worldly things.

Nanak prays, the servant of the One's servants: the world loses, and that one wins.

Whoever lets go of the world's prizes wins what lasts.
The deeper layer

Early morning is a special time to remember the One.

Naa-o parbhaatai sabad Dhi-aa-ee-ai: think on the Name and the Word in parbhaat, the quiet hours before dawn. Sikhs call this time amrit vela, the sweet early hours. It gives Raag Prabhaatee its name and its feeling. Chhodahu dunee pareetaa: let go of your grip on worldly things.

Paranvat naanak daasan daasaa: Nanak prays as the servant of servants, a sign of deep humility. Jag haari-aa tin jeetaa: the world loses, and that person wins. Here is the big flip. Letting go, which the world calls losing, is the winning that counts. It is like opening your hand to drop a toy. Now your hand is free to hold something better.

A Question to Sit With

Can losing at something the world values ever turn out to be winning?
