In plain words

When the One showed me mercy, the ego inside me, that proud little "me," was rooted out.

That servant is dear to the One who thinks deeply on the Guru's Word.

Mercy, not force, is what finally dissolves the walls of the ego.
The deeper layer

When the One shows mercy, the ego melts away.

Jaa har parabh kirpaa Dhaaree, taa ha-umai vichahu maaree — when the Lord showed mercy, the ego was undone from inside me. Ha-umai is the ego, the feeling of being a separate little "me" that always has to guard itself.

Notice the order. Mercy comes first. Then the ego melts. It is not beaten by force. Think of an ice cube in a warm hand. You do not have to smash it. The warmth does the work.

The one who is raam pi-aaree, dear to the One, is the one who beechaaree. That means they think about the Guru's teaching and live by it.

A Question to Sit With

When has kindness changed you more than being told off ever could?
