What Melts Away in the Sangat

kaam kroDh lobh jhooth nindaa saaDhoo sang bidaarnaa. ||3||
Sexual desire, anger, greed, falsehood and slander are banished in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Grabbing desire, hot anger, greed, lies, and putting others down —

all of these are driven away in the Sangat, among the holy people.

The Sangat loosens the grip of the things that tangle us up.
The deeper layer

Our worst habits are driven away in the Sangat, people gathered together to remember the One.

The verse names a tangle of five troubles. Kaam is strong, grabbing desire. KroDh is anger. Lobh is greed. Jhooth is lying. Nindaa is putting others down with unkind talk.

SaaDhoo sang bidaarnaa means these are undone in the saadh sang, the gathering of holy people. They are not scrubbed out by force. They melt away in the Sangat.

Think of an ice cube. You can hit it with a hammer, or you can simply set it in the warm sun. The Sangat is like that warm sun.

A Question to Sit With

How do the people around you change the way you act?
