A Clear Mind, a Peaceful Life

ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੂਖੇ ਸੂਖਿ ਗੁਦਾਰਨਾ ॥੪॥
naam japat man nirmal hovai sookhay sookh gudaarnaa. ||4||
Chanting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the mind becomes immaculate, and life is passed in absolute peace. ||4||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Keep the Name close, and the mind grows clear and clean.

Then your days pass in a deep, settled peace.

A mind kept clear by the Name lets your days pass in peace.
The deeper layer

Keeping the Name close makes the mind clear and the days peaceful.

Naam japat man nirmal hovai means that by repeating and remembering the Name, the mind becomes nirmal. That means spotless and clear. Remembering the Name is what clears and calms us.

Sookhay sookh gudaarnaa means our days are spent in peace upon peace. Think of a muddy glass of water left to sit quietly. The mud sinks, and the water turns clear.

A Question to Sit With

What makes your mind feel clear and calm?
