Sikhism·Raag Raamkalee·Shabad 100
Verse 8 of 9

You Feed What You Have Made

ਤੂ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਭਨਾ ਜੀਆ ਕਾ ਆਪਨ ਕੀਆ ਪਾਲਨਾ ॥੭॥
too daataa sabhnaa jee-aa kaa aapan kee-aa paalnaa. ||7||
You are the Giver of all beings; You cherish what You have made. ||7||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You are the One who gives to every living being.

And whatever You have made, You lovingly look after.

The One who made you does not walk away — the caring continues.
The deeper layer

The One gives to every living thing and keeps caring for it.

Too daataa sabhnaa jee-aa kaa means "You are the Giver of all living beings." Aapan kee-aa paalnaa means You lovingly look after what You have made.

The Giver does not give once and walk away. The caring goes on. Think of a gardener who plants a seed. She does not leave it there alone. She waters it and watches over it every day as it grows.

A Question to Sit With

What does it mean to look after something, not just make it?
