When Cleverness Runs Out

ਘਾਲ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਉਕਤਿ ਨ ਮੇਰੀ ਪੂਰੈ ਗੁਰੂ ਕਮਾਈ ॥੧੨॥
ghaal si-aanap ukat na mayree poorai guroo kamaa-ee. ||12||
Clever tricks have not worked for me; I shall act according to the Instructions of the Perfect Guru. ||12||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My hard work, my clever tricks and my smart arguments did not get me there.

So now I live by what the Perfect Guru teaches.

Sometimes cleverness runs out, and you simply live the teaching instead.
The deeper layer

Ghaal siaanap ukat na mayree — striving and cleverness and arguments got nowhere. This is a quiet undoing of haumai, the ego that thinks it can engineer its own arrival. Poorai guroo kamaa-ee: the doing shifts from my scheming to living out the Guru's teaching.

A Question to Sit With

When has trying to be clever gotten in your way?
