Light in an Instant

ਪਤਿਤ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਕੀਏ ਖਿਨ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਅੰਧੇਰੁ ਵੰਞਾਈ ॥੩॥
patit puneet kee-ay khin bheetar agi-aan anDhayr vanjaa-ee. ||3||
In an instant, He purifies the sinners, and dispels the darkness of ignorance. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

In a single moment, those who had lost their way are made clean and whole again.

The darkness of not-knowing is swept out, the way light fills a room the instant you lift the shade.

No one is beyond returning, and the turn can happen in an instant.
The deeper layer

Patit puneet — the fallen made pure — is one of Gurbani's tenderest promises: no one is beyond return, and the turn can happen khin bheetar, in an instant. Agi-aan andhayr is the darkness of not-knowing; grace does not fight it slowly but simply lights the room.

A Question to Sit With

Has understanding something ever changed how you felt all at once?
