ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੪॥
karan kaaran samrath su-aamee naanak tis sarnaa-ee. ||4||
The Lord is all-powerful, the Cause of causes. Nanak seeks His Sanctuary. ||4||

The Master is powerful beyond measure, the cause behind every cause.
Nanak says: I seek the shelter of that One.
Rest in the source that everything else traces back to.
Karan kaaran samrath: the all-able One who is the cause behind all causes. If everything traces back to this One, then sarnaa-ee (taking shelter) is simply resting in the source you already came from.
