ਸਿਖਹੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਿਆਰਿਹੋ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਕੀ ਟੇਕ ॥
sikhahu sabad pi-aariho janam maran kee tayk.
Study the Word of the Shabad, O beloveds. It is your anchoring support in life and in death.
ਮੁਖੁ ਊਜਲੁ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਏਕ ॥੧॥
mukh oojal sadaa sukhee naanak simrat ayk. ||1||
Your face shall be radiant, and you will be at peace forever, O Nanak, meditating in remembrance on the One Lord. ||1||

Learn the Word, the Shabad, dear ones.
It is your anchor in living and in dying.
Nanak says: keep the One in mind, and your face will shine and you will be at peace forever.
The Word is the anchor that holds in living and in dying.
Learn the Word, beloved ones: sikhahu sabad pi-aariho. Janam maran kee tayk is the support that holds through both living and dying, like an anchor that keeps a boat steady in any weather. Mukh oojal (a radiant face) is the outward glow of an inner peace found in simran, keeping the One in mind.
This opening Shalok (a short couplet) sets the key for the whole hymn.
