In thought, word and deed, I contemplate the Lord's Name.
ghooman ghayr mahaa at bikh-rhee gurmukh naanak paar utaaree. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The horrible world-ocean is very treacherous; O Nanak, the Gurmukh is carried across. ||1||Pause||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
In what I think, what I say, and what I do, I keep the Naam of the One in mind.
The ocean of the world is frightening and very hard to cross.
Nanak says: the Gurmukh, the one who faces the Guru, is carried across.
Keep the One in thought, word, and deed, and the rough water is crossed.
Man, bach, karam: thought, word, and deed, the three ways a whole life moves, all turned toward the Naam. Ghooman ghayr is the swirling whirlpool of the world, rough water that pulls you down. The gurmukh, the one who faces the Guru, is carried across.
This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the centre of the hymn.
A Question to Sit With
How can what you think, say, and do all point the same way?
