Sikhism·Raag Raamkalee·Shabad 103
Verse 2 of 9

Peace Inside, Peace Outside

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸੂਖਾ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਸੂਖਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਮਲਨ ਭਏ ਦੁਸਟਾਰੀ ॥੧॥
antar sookhaa baahar sookhaa har jap malan bha-ay dustaaree. ||1||
Inwardly, peace, and outwardly, peace; meditating on the Lord, evil tendencies are crushed. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Peace on the inside, peace on the outside.

When I hold the One in mind, the harmful pulls inside me are crushed.

Hold the One in mind, and the harmful pulls inside are crushed.
The deeper layer

Antar sookhaa baahar sookhaa: peace within and peace without, the two matching at last. Malan and dustaaree are the harmful tendencies inside us, and remembering the One crushes them. Inner peace is not a wall against the world; it is a calm that reaches all the way out.

A Question to Sit With

What helps the peace inside you match the way you act on the outside?
