Sikhism·Raag Raamkalee·Shabad 103
Verse 4 of 9

Pride Collapses Under Its Own Weight

ਉਧਰੇ ਸੰਤ ਪਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਨੀ ਪਚਿ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਮਹਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥੩॥
uDhray sant paray har sarnee pach binsay mahaa ahaNkaaree. ||3||
The Saints are saved, in His Sanctuary; the very egotistical people rot away and die. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The saints are saved in the shelter of the One.

And the very proud wither away and die, like a plant that rots from inside.

Shelter in the One saves; great pride rots away from inside.
The deeper layer

Udhray sant paray har sarnee: those in the One's shelter are lifted up and saved. The mahaa ahankaaree, the greatly proud, pach binsay: they rot away and perish. Ego, haumai (the feeling of being a separate self), eats away at a person from within, like rot in a plant. It is a sickness, and the shelter of the One is its cure.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever seen someone's pride quietly get in its own way?
