Verse 17 of 24

He Was Never Far

saaDh pathaa-ay aap har ham tum tay naahee door.
The Lord Himself sent His Holy Saints, to tell us that He is not far away.
naanak bharam bhai mit ga-ay raman raam bharpoor. ||2||
O Nanak, doubt and fear are dispelled, chanting the Name of the all-pervading Lord. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One sent the holy saints to tell us: I am not far from you.

Nanak says: doubt and fear are gone, remembering the One who fills everything.

What felt far away may have been close the whole time.
The deeper layer

Ham tum tay naahee door — "I am not far from you" — the reassurance carried by the saadh (the holy). The whole Ruti circles this: the One only seemed distant. Bhram bhai mit ga-ay — doubt and fear are dispelled by remembrance of the all-pervading One.

A Question to Sit With

Has something you feared was distant turned out to be near?
